A Wide Open Door

Calgarians are anxious. As the oil boom comes to an end, there is a sense of stress and fear. People who have tried to buy their way to happiness are realizing the vanity of wealth and chasing after the wind. Others who have trusted in the security of a prosperous society are now disoriented and confused about what life is all about.

The door is wide open.

That is how the apostle Paul would describe our church’s situation. In the middle of Calgary, we are just like he was in the middle of Ephesus. There is a great gospel opportunity today, just as there was back then. He said in 55 AD:

“I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost,
for a wide door for effective work has opened to me”
(1 Corinthians 16.9)

Paul saw there was a great gospel opportunity in Ephesus. He called it a ‘wide door’.

There is a ‘wide door for effective work’ that is open for you today. There are great gospel opportunities awaiting us. Opportunities to see God’s grace active, as the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16.8). There are opportunities to lay foundations for ministry that will reach out to lost Calgarians not only in this coming year, but in the coming decades.

There is a wide open door that is being presented to us for acquiring a ministry facility (a facility committee is looking at options in the city). As prices fall in Calgary, there is an important window of opportunity coming soon when we can secure a ministry space of our own. By investing in a ministry centre now, we can relieve future generations of the burden to build or buy a space. Sacrifices we make today are not merely for the benefit of our own generation, but for generations to come.

As Calgary is anxious about its worldly hope, will you express your kingdom hope through a one time gift?

Regular ministry must continue. Regular budgets and regular stewardship must remain. But do we see the opportunity of this wide open door? Our worship of Jesus Christ will be seen in our investments for his victorious kingdom.

Let us seize God-granted gospel opportunities together,

Clint
